Project:
District-wide RPZ Installation
Location: Sachem Central School District
Completion
Date: Summer 2003
In
1974, the U.S. Congress passed the Clean Water Act, which mandates
all water purveyors be responsible for providing clean, safe, potable
water. As a result, states, counties and local jurisdictions have
set in place cross connection control programs to prevent contamination
of public water supplies. The Suffolk County Water Authority has
since undertaken a review of all existing facilities to determine,
on a case-by-case basis, any potential hazard that may exist.
The
Suffolk County Water Authority deems that any public or commercial
facilities with over 10,000 square feet of occupied floor space
constitutes a potential contamination hazard. As a result, Reduced
Pressure Zone (RPZ) devices are required to isolate them from the
public water supply.
McClave
Engineering, P.C. was retained by
the Sachem Central School District
when the Suffolk County Water Authority audited their facilities and
determined they posed a hazard to the public water supply. The solution
required the design and installation of twelve Reduced Pressure Zone
backflow prevention devices throughout the district. Currently, McClave
Engineering, P.C. has completed the design and installation
of the RPZ devices, and all twelve units are fully operational.
