The
original Longwood Elementary Schools were constructed during the
energy crisis of the early 1970’s. The schools were all approximately
20,000 sq. ft. each and all electrically heated.
The
additions to the Longwood Elementary Schools added approximately
50,000 sq. ft. to each school - more than doubling the existing
space. Besides adding the additional space to the schools, the project
also included the conversion from electric heat to an alternative
system.
McClave
Engineering’s design included site work for a new electrical
feed and transformer, site lighting, sanitary system, storm drainage,
potable water and R.P.Z., fire main and natural gas. Inside the
buildings, thirty-eight new classrooms, three special education
rooms, six resource rooms, office space, a gymnasium, a cafeteria
and kitchen, a library and a multipurpose room were all added.
Through
this project, the design also addressed the goal to remove the electric
heating system. All of the existing spaces were renovated and converted
to use the same high efficiency hydronic heating system that was
designed for the new space.
